Construct process:
The automation research department, founded in 1987,started to research the library management software system by itself. The self-made software was put into use in February 1989,to control the circulation of about 70,000 volumes. In 1993, a powerful integrated management system was built, under which the librarians can work on acquisitions, cataloging, serials management and circulation functions. In the same year, the catalog database of Chinese books was built. Computers also started to organize the work of periodical collecting in 1994. In 1998, an advanced automation management system was introduced. The system has powerful management functions and serves the Library efficiently with high quality.
Current situations:
Bochuan Library has participated in extensive cooperative activities with many international university libraries and information centers with a direct connection to CERNET, CHINANET, and the international communication line. For example, the Library provides access to various online databases such as DIALOG. In 1998, an ATM network system was built surpassing that of than many other national university libraries.
Network system:
Our library chooses net computers from SUN and ATM products from 3COM to build an ATM switching network planet.
Software:
The integrated system of Bochuan Library uses an advanced client/server structure. The system, which consists of collection, classification and inquiry modules, meets TCP/IP communication and Z39.50 retrieval protocol standards.
Database construction:
The self-made databases of Bochuan Library are mainly catalogs, including Chinese science periodicals, English language periodicals, English committee proceedings, English language books(80%), Chinese language books(50%),and offer standard databases. There are also several special subject databases such as the full text database of Masters theses. All these databases are available for online retrieval and exchange.
